You know exactly how orders vary between themselves in your store. It’s great that some customers order a lot. But their packages also weight a lot!

There’s little difference between 2, 5 and 10 kilos for your customers (somehow heavier, they could say). However, we know your perspective. The higher the weight, the more your carrier charges you for the delivery.

That’s why you need to configure shipping cost per weight. You can be sure you’ll learn it in this article. I’ll guide you step by step.

Introduction

Available configuration options

There are two ways in which you can configure shipping cost per weight in WooCommerce:

  • flat rate for a rule
  • automatic calculation

Flat rate for a rule means for example:

  • for orders from 0 to 2kg set shipping cost to $10.00
  • and set $15.00 as a shipping cost for orders from 2.01kg

You can define as many rules like that as you want.

However, it may be quite difficult if you need more than a few rules. You can use automatization then.

Automatic calculation of a rule means for example:

  • set shipping cost to $0.001 for each 1g (e.g. 1 kg is $1.00)
  • or start from $10.00 then add $1.00 for each kg

I’ll show you how to configure both (flat rate and automatic calculation) options.

It’s free but…

Now, you have to know about the cost of implementation. You can configure shipping cost per weight in WooCommerce for free. You just need to use Flexible Shipping plugin.

However, if you want to set automated rules, you need to upgrade Flexible Shipping to the PRO version.

Don’t forget you need PRO version of Flexible Shipping to automate rules calculation.

Set shipping cost to $0.001 for each 1g

You need to configure shipping a rule like this:

Shipping cost per weight - PRO rule

How does it work?

  • 100 g parcel costs $0.10
  • 2 kg parcel costs $2.00
  • 14.5 kg parcel costs $14.50
