Kurzgesagt - spreading science, one beautifully designed product at a time

Kurzgesagt is the online shop behind one of the internet’s most beloved science YouTube channels, Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell. Since taking their merchandise online, they’ve built a full catalog of posters, journals, apparel, plushies, mugs, and accessories, all designed in-house and built to spark curiosity about science, space, and life itself. Every product goes through the same rigorous, research-backed process as their videos, which is exactly why fans keep coming back for more.

Behind the scenes they run on Shopify Plus, shipping their products to fans all over the world, which means their shipping setup has to keep up with a genuinely complex, multi-courier logistics network. That’s the part that made things complicated and it’s why their fulfilment team got in touch with us in the first place.

Starting point: Questions without answers

Before reaching out to us, Kurzgesagt‘s team already had a good sense of what they needed. The hard part was figuring out how to actually make it work in Shopify. The questions they kept running into were things like:

  1. How do we set up shipping rates that change depending on the courier and service, not just the destination?
  2. How can we ship one product with a different service when it’s ordered solo, but use another one when there are multiple items or it’s combined with other products?
  3. How do we make sure the right shipping method shows up only when it should, based on weight and product type, but without confusing customers with irrelevant options?
  4. Is there a single app that can handle all of these conditions?

The core challenges

Shipping issues Kurzgesagt had to deal with

01

Applying different services and rates conditionally

Kurzgesagt needed to ship the same product mix to the same country using different courier services depending on the order itself, e.g., a shipment to Germany might qualify for one courier’s service if it’s under 1 kg and doesn’t include certain products, but the moment either of those conditions changes, a completely different service needs to take over.

02

Splitting logic across multiple rates and conditional visibility

It wasn’t just about calculating a price — it was about showing the correct rate and hiding the rest. Kurzgesagt needed several rate variations built at once, each tied to its own set of conditions, with the “wrong” options automatically disappearing at checkout so customers never saw a rate that didn’t apply to them.

03

Setup that needs to be easy to maintain

Kurzgesagt tested a handful of apps before finding ours, and ran into the same wall each time: rule-based, condition-heavy shipping setups tend to come with a steep learning curve. On top of that, listing out every affected product by SKU turns into a maintenance headache the moment the catalog changes. They needed a way to group products logically instead.

04

Free shipping threshold that accounts for discounts and truly bulletproof setup

On top of the conditional courier logic, Kurzgesagt also had a free shipping threshold to fold into the mix — and it needed to correctly account for price changes coming from discounts, not just the raw cart total. The whole configuration had to be easy to adjust down the road, while still being bulletproof enough to reliably cover every possible combination of weight, product type, and cart value, with no edge case slipping through the cracks.

How we solved it

Kurzgesagt case study working phases

01

Research of the apps and the first contact

Kurzgesagt tried several shipping apps before landing on Octolize’s Shipping Rates Rules & Zones. What stood out immediately was the interface — clean, logical, and intuitive. That clarity ultimately tipped the scales in our favor, as the app proved straightforward enough for the team to understand how it worked without ever having to consult the documentation.

02

Mapping the real-world logic to the app

We walked Kurzgesagt’s fulfilment team through exactly how Shipping Rates Rules & Zones handles conditional logic — combining weight-based with product-based conditions to control which courier and service shows up at checkout for given order. Their original approach was already headed in the right direction, and we confirmed their thinking was sound.

03

Powering the logic with product tags and WHEN-THEN rules

Rather than listing every affected SKU one by one (and having to update that list every time the catalog changed), we showed Kurzgesagt how to use product tags instead — new products just get tagged, and the existing rate rules pick them up automatically. Those tags are picked up by a set of WHEN-THEN rules, which handle both the shipping cost calculations and the conditional logic deciding which DHL service gets displayed — DHL Kleinpaket or DHL Standard. Whenever an order matches a given set of conditions, the correct service shows up automatically at checkout and every other option stays hidden, with the free shipping threshold (discount-adjusted cart value included) factored in as just another condition in the same logic.

04

Building and testing the live setup together

During the call, we built the scenario live together: several shipping rates configured side by side, each with its own weight and product tag conditions, each hidden or shown automatically depending on which conditions were met. Before rolling anything out to real customers, Kurzgesagt put the entire configuration through its paces on their development store, running through different weight, product, and discount combinations to confirm every rate and every service showed up exactly where it should.

05

Results

With Shipping Rates Rules & Zones in place, Kurzgesagt now runs a shipping setup that mirrors exactly how their fulfilment process actually works — the right courier and service for the right order, every time, with no manual intervention and no customer confusion at checkout. What’s more, the setup is now maintainable and bulletproof: recognizing products by their tags, rather than chasing SKU lists, is what keeps the rules current as the catalog grows, while the WHEN-THEN logic reliably covers every combination of weight, product, and free shipping threshold they need.

“Even thought it looks so simple, app is offering a great solutions for our fulfilment. Especially a possibility to set up a few shipping zones within a country, so that it helps to avoid crazy surcharges like remote region surcharge from specific carriers. App is quite intuitive and simple in use. Still if you have any questions left you can easily schedule a short call and guys will guide you through all the blind spots.”
